Evaluating the painful shoulder
To assess a painful or weakened shoulder, employ a combination of range-of-motion and strength tests, history taking, and selective use of corticosteroid injection. The shoulder has a wide range of motion (ROM)—nearly 180 degrees in multiple planes—but it is a highly unstable joint. Its structure can be compared to that of a golf ball on a tee held in place by loose static stabilizers (the ligaments of the joint capsule).

Tigecycline: A novel glycylcycline antiobiotic
Highly resistant strains of both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria are becoming commonplace in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. Recently developed antimicrobials have targeted resistant gram-positive pathogens, but the problem of resistant gram-negative pathogens remains. Tigecycline is an injectable antimicrobial and the first in a new class of agents (the glycylcyclines) that possesses activity against key gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial pathogens.
