Contemporary detection and management of traumatic posterior urethral injuries

Traumatic posterior urethral injuries are commonly associated with such morbidities as incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and urethral strictures, any or all of which can have lifelong repercussions. One new technique, primary urethral realignment with catheter placement and delayed repair, appears to minimize comorbidities—which are usually less severe and require fewer procedures to correct—compared with previously favored techniques.

The patient had no urinary symptoms. Physical examination revealed a painful, firm, left inguinal mass without erythema. The left testicle, epididymis, and vas deferens were normal to palpation. No inguinal hernias could be appreciated.
